Counselors work in community agencies, religious institutions, hospitals, private practice, and schools. Students acquire knowledge in the disciplines that underlie counseling including education, psychology, human development, learning, and social change. Students develop basic skills in counseling and assessment and become familiar with the legal and clinical considerations that confront practitioners. Students engage in repeated practice and role playing with feedback and strategic modification and complete a year-long Practicum and Internship experience. The Counseling program provides the educational and clinical requirements necessary for certification, licensure, and actual counseling practice.
You can choose to begin professional work directly upon completion or further your studies by pursuing a doctoral degree. Studies stress and coping as it relates to professionals in educational settings, health and wellness, and the identification of psychological resources that can help prevent stress. The Counselor Education program, in which the School Counseling concentration is offered, is housed in the Department of Educational Psychology. The department has consistently been ranked in the top 10 Educational Psychology programs by U.S. Educational Psychology is not accepting master’s program applications to the School Counseling concentration for fall 2024.
School Counseling Careers
Due to accreditation site visits being delayed because of COVID-19, the CACREP Board approved additional retroactive recognition for program graduates. Retroactive recognition of graduates of the IU School of Education at IUPUI School Counseling specialty area extends back to July 14, 2019. Throughout the program, you’ll learn from a diverse, highly experienced faculty dedicated to improving education in urban environments. As a school counselor, you help students work through a wide variety of issues, overcome serious obstacles, and make decisions that will influence their future for years to come. The path to becoming a licensed counselor has specific requirements for each state, and some types of counseling, especially substance use counseling, have different requirements from others. States set regulations about how to become a licensed counselor and what counselors do.

Counselors typically complete a four-year bachelor’s degree and pursue a master’s degree in counseling before they begin their practice. Some counselors earn a counseling undergraduate degree, but those interested in pursuing a master’s degree may have a bachelor’s degree in a different or related field such as sociology, cultural anthropology or psychology.

Although NOT accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the core competencies described above have been influenced by those developed by this Council. Applicants should clearly indicate in their Statement of Purpose the type of setting in which they plan to work. If experience as a teacher will be necessary and the applicant does not have teaching experience, the applicant should clearly indicate in the Statement of Purpose how the applicant plans to acquire that experience. Assistant Professor Rolanda Mitchell shares how school counselors can be a mental health resource for K-12 students and what to do when families or students are reluctant to use school counseling services. Our certificate program allows students to learn in a flexible environment, with flexible online classwork, without the hassle of traffic and on-campus parking. Students will meet online each week for a 90-minute interactive discussion with the professor, instructors and classmates, in order to stay connected and challenged. We, therefore, provide training, experiences and practice that help all members of our learning community develop knowledge and skills to provide counseling that meets the needs of all of our clients.
